Any recomendations for ink jet printer sub $400. Primary use will be
general printing, but also alot of photographic stuff. I have blue and
white G3 350 mhz , 640 meg RAM, Running OS 9.2 ( and eventually OS X ).

Thanks

Nath

More important than the cost of the printer is the cost of cartidges. I
would suggest you narrow your choice of printers down, then check this
cost and base your purchase on this. Even better is to use cartridge
refills, which make printing much cheaper. Some brands refill better
than others.

*Takes deep breath* ...

Having sold quite a few, and used quite a few sub-$400 printers in the
last year, I have way too much knowledge not to share ;)

First recommendation is the HP 930C. It can be had from OfficeWorks or
Bing Lee for $228 and does FANTASTIC colour printing. The slight
downside of this is the cartridges are a little expensive ($70-75) but
unlike some of the other HP printers, it uses larger cartridges (HP has
been selling other models with smaller cartridges that are almost the
same price, which I consider a bit of a rip-off).

Second would be the Epson C70, which you can find at some places for
just under $400. The benefit of this printer is not only fantastic
quality which Epson has a reputation for, but individual colour ink
tanks (unlike many other printers that have an all-in-one colour unit)
which can save you money in the long run if you do alot of colour printing.

Canon have brought the price of their S600 down considerably, I've seen
it for below $400 as well in some places. Like the Epson C70, it has
inexpensive individual colour ink tanks, at a somewhat lower price than
the Epson. The downside is, the colour printing is not quite as good.
However, they are soon bringing out a new range of printers which have
much better quality colour.

Other options and comments:
HP 840C/845C: Under $200, but has ink tanks half the size of the 930's
but not much cheaper.
HP 948C: Faster than a 930C, but has the half-size No. #15 black, which
means everyone and their dog wants a 930C to avoid it.
HP 640C/656C: Cheap and nasty (sorry Don). Has a bad rep. Luck of the
draw whether they last more than a couple of months without crapping out.

Epson: C40, C60: Most commonly seen in Apple Centres. Good colour
printing, not totally unreasonable cartridge prices, but they are NOISY.

Canon: S400SP/S450: Individual ink tanks = cheap printing, but not so
good colour quality.
Canon: S200/S300: Quite good colour printing, but SLOW.

Hope this is useful :)

PS: These comments are IMHO so I'm not unwelcome to anyone who disagrees
with them ;)

The HP 930c is the one I bought for home where I knew I wouldn't be doing
any bulk printing. It is great for A4 photo quality prints and in OSX I
just plugged it in and it worked. I liked it so much I had work buy one for
low quantity, high quality needs.

So, I agree with Amos, the HP930c produces FANTASTIC photo quality prints.

I also have a 930C - best printer I have owned - reliable - very good
quality in both text and photos - mine has never clogged up - it just
sits there and prints when I want it to. What more could you want.
Also, if you go to Cartridge World they refill the black cartridge for $33.

I think Dick Smith is selling them for around the $300 mark

As others noted, the cost of cartridges is very important as genuine
replacement cartridges can cost as much as the printer itself! Talk
about Total Cost of Ownership vs Capital Cost!!

I've found Canon, Epson and then HP to have the cheaper cartidge costs
(in that order). Lexmark cartridges cost $70 plus - and some of their
printers don't even come with a colour cartridge, not to mention they
don't sell separate colour cartridges.

But you should see how much non-genuine replacement cartridges cost.
Apparently, Calidad (http://www.calidad.com.au/) make good non-genuine
cartridges and many are only about $10 each. For example, Dick Smith are
selling the Lexmark Z12 for about $79. It's a 1200 dpi colour printer
with OSX drivers available. That sounds pretty good. But the genuine
colour cartridge costs $77. However, a Calidad replacement includes 2
refills in the one pack and from checking a couple of web sites it looks
like it costs $29.95 at Hardly Normal (aka Harvey Norman ;-).

Make sure you also check whether the printer manafacturer makes a driver
for OS X, especially if you're getting a 2nd hand printer. Canon have
provided very few OSX drivers for older model printers.

Cheers
Dale

I have a BWG3 400 rev2 768mb RAM, OS X 10.1.3. Last year I bought an
Epson Stylus Color 680, about $260 I think. OS X included drivers for
this printer so it worked straight away when I switched from OS 9 to X.
Carts cost abround $40 - $50 each for black and colour, there is only
one colour cart unlike some of the Canons. The printer is OK for my
limited home use. A bit noisy. One downside is that this model has the
carts with a small chip embedded which is Epson's answer to prevent you
uing non Epson carts. You can't refill the Epson carts AFAIK. There is
one substitute cart imported from UK which is a bit cheaper but not by
much.
